In today’s fast-paced world, finding time to prepare healthy, homemade meals can be challenging. Enter the homemade frozen pizza – a game-changer for busy moms everywhere! This blog post will guide you through the process of creating your own frozen pizzas, offering tips, tricks, and delicious recipe ideas.

Why Make Your Own Frozen Pizzas?

  • Control over ingredients and nutrition – Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on a box of store bought frozen pizza?  I challenge you to look the next time you’re at the grocery store.  The results may shock you!  If you’re trying to stay away from seed oils and ultra processed foods, you’re going to want to say NO to store bought, and YES to homemade!
  • Cost-effective compared to store-bought options – Like everything else in the grocery store, the price of frozen pizzas has gone up over the past few years.  It wasn’t that long ago that you could pick up a frozen pizza for around $5, but now, they’re all $7 or more!  While the exact cost of a homemade frozen pizza will vary depending on the ingredients you use, I made 6 frozen cheese pizzas for $6.32!

  • Customizable to suit dietary needs and preferences – If you need to avoid gluten, you can use your favorite gluten free pizza dough recipe and follow the same instructions.  It’s a game changer for allergens.
  • Perfect for meal prep and busy weeknights – We all have days that get away from us, or when we forget to set something out for dinner.  I work from home, and it happens to me more often than I care to admit!  Instead of going out to eat, or trying to figure something out in a pinch, just turn on your oven and pop in a homemade frozen pizza!

How to Make Homemade Frozen Pizzas

The hardest thing about making frozen pizzas is making the crust.  Use your favorite pizza dough recipe, or try one of these if you don’t have a favorite yet!

Par-Bake the Crust
  1. Make your favorite pizza dough recipe as normal, and shape your crust to desired size.
  2. Pop holes with a fork in the center of your pizza – everywhere but where the crust will be – and brush lightly with olive oil.
  3. Bake at 450°F (230°C) for 7 minutes, then remove and cool par-baked crust before assembling pizzas.

Assemble and Freeze
  1. Assemble your pizzas with preferred toppings on parchment paper for easy transfer.
  2. Place the assembled pizzas in the freezer for about 3 hours before wrapping.
  3. Wrap each pizza tightly in parchment or freezer paper, then plastic wrap to keep ingredients fresh.
  4. Label with the date and contents before storing in the freezer.

Cook Your Frozen Pizza

When you’re ready to enjoy your homemade frozen pizza:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Remove all wrapping and place the pizza directly on the oven rack or baking stone.
  3. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and the crust is golden.

Tips for Making Homemade Frozen Pizzas

  • Double your dough recipe because you aren’t going to want to make all of these homemade pizzas and not get to eat any immediately!
  • Nobody likes a soggy pizza, and a watery sauce is usually the culprit.  Be sure to purchase a jar of pizza sauce vs tomato sauce if going with store bought, or cooking off the water if doing homemade.
  • Grate your own cheese – pre-grated cheese is convenient, but buying a block of low moisture mozzarella and grating it yourself will yield better results.  There are stabilizers added to pre-grated cheese to keep it from sticking together in the bag, but these same stabilizers also make the cheese melt differently.
  • Make a pizza-making party out of it! Par-bake the crusts and have your family help “decorate” pizzas with their favorite toppings.

Topping Ideas

The sky’s the limit when it comes to toppings. Here are some of our favorite combinations:

  • Meat Lover’s: Pepperoni, sausage, and bacon
  • Veggie Supreme: Bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and olives
  • BBQ Chicken: BBQ sauce, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, and red onions
  • Buffalo Chicken: Buffalo sauce mixed with pizza sauce, buffalo sauce coated chicken, green onions, and garnish with ranch dressing and cilantro after baking

Give it a try and elevate your weeknight dinner game!
